New Guide for Associations, Friends Groups, and Library Non-Profits on Election Participation

VoteLibraries and Nonprofit VOTE are releasing a new Voter Engagement Guide for library-focused nonprofit organizations to support and encourage their non-partisan participation in elections and civic engagement.

The EveryLibrary Institute is excited to announce a new partnership with Nonprofit VOTE to release a comprehensive voter engagement guide specifically designed for 501(c)(3) library nonprofit organizations, including Friends of Libraries groups, library Foundations, and state and local library associations, through our VoteLibraries initiative. With the November 2024 elections rapidly approaching, this guide provides essential resources for organizations that want to become involved in civic engagement—safely and effectively—within the boundaries of their nonprofit status.

Libraries, as trusted community spaces, have a unique responsibility to foster civic engagement and encourage voter participation. However, nonprofit organizations must operate within strict legal frameworks to remain nonpartisan, especially during election season. Our new voter engagement guide equips library supporters with the knowledge they need to engage voters in meaningful ways without engaging in political endorsements or partisan activities.

Through this guide, nonprofit organizations can learn how to promote voter registration, educate the public on ballot issues that affect libraries, and support democratic participation in ways that are fully compliant with IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) groups.

Libraries are facing unprecedented challenges, from book bans and censorship to funding cuts. The upcoming elections will have a profound impact on the future of our libraries and the communities they serve. That’s why it’s more important than ever for library associations, Friends and Foundations, and other non-profits to be involved in the democratic process. With this guide, your organization will be equipped to engage voters on the issues that matter most—without ever straying into partisan territory. We encourage you to take the time to review the guide and start planning how your organization can help ensure a strong voter turnout in 2024.
