On September 17, 2024, we celebrate National Voter Registration Day, a day dedicated to protecting democracy by registering all eligible citizens to vote.
VoteLibraries is a proud Partner of National Voter Registration Day because we recognize the unique role that public libraries play in election administration. As trusted members of your community, public librarians have a responsibility to ensure that citizens are registered to vote and empowered to access the ballot. Here’s how your library can participate in National Voter Registration Day 2024:
-
Become a National Voter Registration Day Community Partner. As a community partner, you agree to be nonpartisan, inclusive, and aware of your state’s voter registration laws when conducting voter registration efforts in your library.
-
Partner with local organizations and election officials. By partnering with nonpartisan groups, such as your library’s friends organization, local library alliances, state library association, local League of Women Voters, and local election offices, you can help register more voters in your community. See how you can leverage existing relationships with local organizations to promote voter registration efforts in other parts of your community.
-
Host a voter registration drive. Libraries are inherently civic spaces that promote free access to information and provide a third space in local communities. In partnership with nonprofit organizations, you can host a voter registration drive in compliance with state and local laws. Libraries can promote events like voter registration drives by creating signage, promotional items (such as bookmarks), and plugging the event during the standard operation of your library.
-
Do NOT be neutral. While public librarians and staff members must be nonpartisan, you have a responsibility not to be neutral. You are responsible for protecting access to information for all, fighting for library funding, and creating a better, more participatory democracy by conducting election administration efforts, including voter registration.
-
Encourage voters to check their registration status. EveryLibrary’s Libraries2024 initiative allows voters to check their voter registration status ahead of election day. By encouraging your community to check their voter registration status, you can prevent barriers to accessing the ballot, including inactive or outdated voter registrations. If they are not registered to vote, you can direct them to the Vote411 tool to get them registered and informed about local ballot measures: https://www.vote411.org/everylibrary
National Voter Registration Day is your library’s chance to put voter registration at the center of democracy. By participating, you can be an active player in civic engagement and election administration and, ultimately, make voting more accessible to all citizens.
