Vote Early Day is on October 28, 2025.
Now more than ever before, it is important to make the tools of democracy as accessible as possible to citizens.
With changing state laws and attacks against voting rights, we encourage all libraries to support early voting so that citizens can actively participate in the civic process. Many public libraries already support Vote Early Day, but our goal is to have every eligible library celebrate early voting in their spaces.
Election Day is the Last Day to Vote
While many people think of voting as an Election Day event, recent polling shows that 66.5% of voters cast their ballots ahead of Election Day. This changing landscape of when voters choose to cast their ballots demonstrates the importance of Vote Early Day and informing eligible citizens about the benefits of early voting.
As trusted members of your community, librarians can help promote and protect democracy by encouraging more citizens to vote early. Remember, Election Day is the last day to vote. Long lines, outdated voter registrations, confusing voting rules, or even threats of political violence can make it extra challenging to vote on this day. Vote Early Day offers a great alternative by reducing the number of barriers to vote that many citizens face.
It’s Not Just About Voting
Vote Early Day is not just about voting early. It’s also a great opportunity to inform the public about important issues on the ballot, voting rules and regulations in your state, and provide them with tools so that they can successfully cast their vote. As a library, you can remain nonpartisan while still informing your patrons about what’s on their ballot. Sometimes, these issues can even impact your library. For example, tax reductions can sometimes lead to cuts in the library’s funding, so you can inform citizens about the importance of supporting local libraries.
Celebrating Vote Early Day does not have to be complicated. Some libraries may choose to work with their local elections office and serve as an early voting location. Others with limited staffing and time could inform patrons about early voting when they check out a book or share voting rules in your state. However you choose to celebrate, we hope you will celebrate Vote Early Day on October 28, 2025.
